Republican gladius parts

I Hilt.

II Carying system formed of 4 rings fixed on 2small transversal bars.

III Wood covered with leather. No decorations have been found there as on later models.

IV Hooping used to maintain the two lateral bronze gutters. All the bronze parts can also be found in iron.

V Finishing chape.

Hilt details

I Tightening screw with 2 small lateral rings to pass a sword knot that will disapear toward the end of the republic.

II Pommel with a design shown on some period sculptures.

III Bone grip.

IV Wooden cross guard with a small bronze rain guard used both for protection and for the hilt tightening. Note the manufacturer logo tending to prove a private manufacturer (bottom photo).

V Blade.
